Spearhead Tournament?

Postby EmperorsWrath » Fri Apr 08, 2011 6:40 pm

Is anyone interested in a Spearhead tournament?

The rules are in a .pdf downloadable from the Astronomicon section of GW's website.

The nice thing about Spearhead is that you can play with zero, some, or all Spearhead units.

Take a look at the rules and reply to this thread.

I think there are only two "Apocalypse" Spearhead formations, we wouldn't use those.

Probably go w/ 2000 point lists.

Given people's army sizes would it be best to make it "normal 40K army plus one Spearhead unit"?

I like the idea, though the latter concept is probably easier to facilitate. Spearhead/Apoc formations are expensive, special situation projects, so I'm not sure how many of us will be able to actually field them. Though the rules are pretty sweet.

There seems to be some confusion as to what Spearhead is.

Spearhead is totally separate from Apocalypse. While there are two Spearhead options that allow you to bring one Super Heavy or one Gargantuan Creature into a normal 40K game, we would not be using those two options for this tournament. We would also not be using the Stronghold Spearhead which is for Planetstrike.

Example of Spearhead: if you play Marines and have a Predator and a Vindicator you could choose the Crusher Spearhead which for 15 points (total, not per tank) would allow up to three Tank units (your Predator and Vindicator, skimmers may not be selected) to use the Ramming Speed! special rule: The Tanks that make up this spearhead count as having a frontal armour value of 15 when they ram another vehicle. Enemy units that are tank shocked by vehicles from this spearhead suffer a -1 Leadership modifier.

That's it, you don't need anything different from your normal 40K army, you don't need more tanks or anything like that.

There are Spearhead formations for Tanks, Skimmers, Infantry, Monsterous Creatures, Fast Skimmers/Bikes/Jetbikes, Troops with Fleet, etc. Spearhead is merely a way to slightly change up a normal 40K game for 15 to 90 extra points depending on which Spearhead is chosen.

Would we also be skipping the spearhead that gives you the 10inch apoc template?

I guess so, it appears the intent of that Spearhead is for Cities of Death. The fluff of the Spearhead is that it is used to destroy buildings and there will not be buildings on every table.

Huh I haven't read that supplement since it released. Guess it is pretty feasible for a tourney scene. Any thoughts on when this thing might start?

After using my lunch hour to read over these.. I think this would be really fun.. A bit combersome until you understand how the datacards work but I think it would be a lot of fun.. I also really like the deployment set ups.. That makes for some interesting times.

So as of right now we are booked for Saturdays out through the end of July except for July 2nd (Fourth of July Weekend).

So, we can have this tournament on either:
1.) a Sunday, which excludes the casual 40K and Warhammer Fantasy players from their open table day
2.) the 2nd of July if there are enough non-BBQing available players
3.) some Saturday in August

Three exorcists with tank hunters? Say what now?

Or..... Three exorcists with destroyer.... (gets free shots before the game starts)

I have enough vindicators to make the line breaker too.
