Par for the course with Games Workshop. Any chance to raise prices.

And for anybody who said they were switching materials so they could lower prices. . . in your face!

Typical GW. I'm not sure I will continue with my plan of a dwarf and a warriors of chaos army for fantasy now. It's pretty bad when they start pricing engineers out of the hobby. Now, to finish my Raven Guard or not? I will have to reflect on the matter.

At least I have my Dark Elves and Empire.

I actually did a bit of reading about this. GW in my opinion is actually increasing prices for a few reasons here. Granted the annual price hike is due but...

1. Current change in sales distribution policy for Gamesworkshop has changed and they are attempting to prevent austrailia from capitolizing on their product by being able to purchase low and sell below normal cost and still make a profit. When exploitation happens like this even of a large business it can make a huge dent in profits.

2. The modification for molds, equipment, and new supply of material to make their new finecast models will be a large up front cost to them when in reality they were actually taking a LOSS on making some metal models because of the current material costs.

3. GW's bullying other people into not making their product, ensuring that people get sued whenever they break the copyright laws has left them in a bit of a hole. They spend more money trying to push people through court actions and have not been monitarily compensated that it has become very expensive for them.

So while profits are up, player base is down, cost to run their business is WAY up. Granted they may not have a good business model but it is the one they chose and none of us are going to change it.

The player base can change it by not buying their product and switching to other games. So many people are walking away from GW this week. The increase in price in what "used to be metal" models is not the only change that is occurring: they are also raising prices again (psst...the last price hike was only seven months ago...). Land Raider is now $66. Assault Marines are $33 for 5. And then there's the Australia / Brazil / other places problems which don't directly affect us but they are yet another view of GW as a company. Not sure why they want to be universally loathed. A price reduction in a poor economic time would have benefited them with positive morale as well as a boost in sales. As soon as you go public and have [stupid] shareholders to have to appease you get decisions like these.

This entertains me. If you check the Australian Dollar exchange rate versus the US Dollar, it's much closer than it used to be. While we pay $40 for a box, they have to pay the equivalent of $80 us dollars. GW refuses to recognize the newer value of the Canadian and Australian Dollar and absolutely will not adjust prices to account for this.

That's why those countries have been using retailers like Maelstrom and buying in pounds versus aussie dollars. How would you feel if you had to pay $70 for 10 Space Marines?

Mantic figures (except the dwarves, which I think are terrible sculpts) are starting to look like a very reasonable price. Tonight I am going to run some numbers on them. My hang up is I love the Olde World more than any other game system background.

GW continues to have business practices that will make them go out of business. I have a small list of items I want to buy from GW before I am done with my Empire and Dark Elf armies, and I am just going to go with that. Any future purchases after that will probably be army books or rule books.

It's pretty lame overall. I'm not terribly angry about the price situation, but GW slowly pushing away its playerbase is not going to help the gaming end of this at all. I mean, yeah some of us can afford the game but how the hell am I supposed to sell new players on such a ridiculous pricing schema, especially now that entry level is even more expensive. They're going to turn the game into such a niche market that only the hardcores will stick around.

This is just another selling point of cheaper games designed by smaller companies (I'm looking at you Spartan Games).

I did run the numbers, Mantic is half as much as an equivalent GW force or better. I woudln't scoff if someone set a Mantic force before my Dark Elves or Empire, but I guess that depends on the individual person. The army kits are $250ish versus $500+ of an equivalent GW product. You just have to get used to the non heroic scale.

At this time, however, I am not starting any new armies for any miniature game.
